Sometimes you encounter situations so terrible that you can't help but burst out chuckling. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer magnitude of unadulterated absurdity and just gives up, opting for laughter as a coping strategy.
But then, you suddenly become read more aware that it's not really funny. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you experienced morphs into a groan.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of confusion. You wonder about the purpose of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?

The tsunami struck suddenly, destroying entire cities in its sweep. Buildings crumbled like house of cards, and the roar that erupted was deafening. Thousands were left beneath rubble, their fate unknown. The magnitude of the disaster was unprecedented, rendering survivors to face a future forever altered.
Rescue efforts sprang into action, fighting against time and dangerous conditions to find those still alive. The nations watched in horror as the full extent of the disaster became apparent, offering prayers to the affected population.
Worst Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't do it to look right. As I was running out the door, I fell and badly all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was completely behind schedule for school.
I panting. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was even worse. was a catastrophe. I get anything done.
By the time I reached my destination, I was exhausted. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
